Alitalia

Alitalia – Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. is Italy’s biggest airline, and the world’s 19th. January 13, 2009 will be remembered in the history of Italian air transport as the date when a new flag airline started operations. On that day, Air One and Alitalia began the process of merging their networks, their fleets and their whole administrative and commercial structure. Including flights operated by its subsidiary Air One Smart Carrier, Alitalia serves 91 destinations; 28 domestic and 63 international, in 40 countries, with more than 2,200 flights a week based on six airports: Rome Fiumicino, Milan, Turin, Venice, Naples and Catania. The company has its head office in coastal city of Fiumicino. Its main hub is Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Rome. “Alitalia” is an Italian portmanteau of the words ali (wings), and Italia (Italy). Alitalia is a member of the SkyTeam alliance joining the leading SkyTeam members: Air France, KLM and Delta’s Transatlantic Joint Venture, meaning that Alitalia has since opened up code-share agreements with SkyTeam members, allowing passengers to fly to numerous destinations using a single Alitalia ticket. Many Slogans Probably, Alitalia is the only airline, which has used a variety of different slogans, and none have been singled out as the most important yet:
  • Voliamo dalla stessa parte” (we fly on the same side)
  • Alitalia fa volare l’Italia” (Alitalia makes Italy fly)
  • Alitalia vola con te” (Alitalia flies with you)
  • Fatti per volare alto” (Made to fly high)
  • Alitalia, al lavoro per te” (Alitalia, working for you)
  • Muoviamo chi muove l’Italia” (We move the people that keep Italy going)
  • The pleasure of flying Made in Italy
  • Volare, nella tua vita” (Flying, in your life)
  • Volare in compagnia dell’Italia” (Fly Italian)
Fleet The Alitalia fleet is one of the youngest fleets in Europe, which is comprised of 147 aircraft. Its fleet operates under five separate Air Operator Certificates: Alitalia (AZ), CAI First (former Alitalia Express) (XM), CAI Second (former Volare Airlines) (VE), Air One (AP) and Air One CityLiner (CT). On the long-haul routes, service is provided by the Boeing 777-200, Boeing 767-300 Extended-Range version and Airbus 330. On medium-haul routes, service is provided by the Airbus 321, 320 and 319, MD80-82 and Boeing 737-400. Service on the regional routes is provided by the Embraer 170 and Bombardier CRJ900. The new Italian flag airline also stands out for the major renewal of the fleet which now consists of upgraded aircraft providing better quality flights with less impact on the environment. Magnifica Business Class enhancement In November 2009, Alitalia began to upgrade their international business class, named Magnifica, on all aircraft. Today, the upgrade is fully available on select routes to/from North America, and partially offered on other routes. The upgrade consists of:
  • New catering (regionally focused, changing monthly and including a new selection of wines and “spumante” changes prepared in cooperation with the Italian Sommelier Association)
  • New blankets / duvets / cushions / linens by Frette
  • New amenity kits by Culti (Starting 2011 the Magnifica amenity kits by Bulgari, while premium economy ones by Culti)
  • New china by Richard Ginori
Alitalia’s flight schedules are carefully worked out to meet customers’ needs – for instance, it is often possible to make roundtrip flights in one day to the main Italian and European destinations. The new Alitalia is taking off, with the aim of becoming the preferred carrier in Italy and internationally. It provides top quality ground and onboard services so that every travel experience has that distinctive touch of Italian style.
