PUNTA CANA - PARADISE ON EARTH

On December 5, 1492, when Christopher Columbus set his feet on the white sandy beach of the island called "Quisqueya" by the Tainos (meaning "the good") who occupied the land, he thought he entered a paradise: turquoise crystal-clear water, lush emerald-green tropical vegetation, high forested mountains, large river valleys, and very friendly and peaceful local people. The “Indian” population estimated around 600,000. Columbus named the place the island of Hispaniola. Columbus had an admiration for Hispaniola but after his crew discovered gold deposits in the island's rivers, some Europeans wanted to stay there and founded first settlements. The hospitable Tainos were enslaved and over the following 25 years were wiped out. To fill the labour gap for their sugar plantations Europeans began bringing African slaves to the island of the New World. In 1496, Columbus' brother, Bartholomew, was appointed governor of Hispaniola and founded the city of Santo Domingo. However, by 1515 the gold deposits became dry and lots of Europeans left Santo Domingo. The new era of the island began – the era of the pirates of the Caribbean. Starting from the XVII century, the times of a French possession, the western area of the island, called by French Saint Domingue, became the richest colony in the world due to the large sugar plantations. In 1809 the eastern side of the island returned to Spanish rule and on February 27, 1844, it declared independence under the name of "Dominican Republic." The Punta Cana International Airport is one of the busiest and best connected airports in the Caribbean which receives over 4 mil passengers. By the way, the airport was built in 1984 and became the world's first privately owned international airport. The area is best known for its fantastic sandy beaches and balnearios - Latin America seaside resort, typically refers to spa town resorts which offer great food, recreation, sports and entertainment. All but two of over 50 mega-resorts and hotel chains are owned by Europeans.
